Psst…my long-awaited Home Progress Report is inside

post by Village Antiques

Ever since we were forced to bare our entire home down to the studs, I’ve been committed to finishing my personal home renovation projects. (In case you didn’t know, we suffered a flood in our home a few years ago!). The severe water damage meant we had to start over. Then, just a short month later, we started over once again after being affected by Houston’s heavy rain.

At least once daily, I get asked about the progress on my home. And every day, I try to avoid the subject as much as possible. I have slowed
down on my home projects to focus on my brand new Amitha Verma Chalky Paint workshops!

In case you haven’t heard, we are launching 3 new and exciting workshops this August…

…so if you’re itching to get some hands on experience with a certified Amitha Verma Chalk Finish Paint teacher,  click here to register for one of hands-on classes now. They are small and sell out fast!

All done?

Good. Now back to my home progress report for this summer:

New “Rain-Proof” Flooring Installed

After being affected by Houston’s unpredictable and heavy rain TWICE, we definitely didn’t want to suffer through the ordeal a third time. So I selected this gorgeous antique “rain-proof” stone flooring for my first floor:

This is how it looked during the installation.

Recreate this same look by perusing the selection at Materials Marketing, Chateau Domingue, Alkusuri & Habitat Stone.

Be sure to keep your square footage needs handy and take cues from what you’re already working with. From renovation #3 (yes, 3!…a story for another day), I had already selected cooler tones for my paint & fabric colors so I used those hues to guide me in my main flooring selection.

My Search For The Perfect Rug

For the past few years, I had to put my desire to “finish” my master bedroom on the back burner so we could use our budget for more visible areas. But this year, I’ve finally committed to finishing it!

To add some warmth and softness to the room, I embarked on the search for the perfect area rug. But it wasn’t easy.

With a room that is long and narrow, finding an area rug that fits snugly into our room’s atypical shape and dimensions was very tricky. So I had to take matters into my own hands and get a designer, patterned carpet specially cut and finished on the edges to look like a rug.

(totally sneak peek!)

It’s in the works right now, but I am backflip level excited! (Right on time for Olympics season!).

What do you think of this pattern I selected?

If you can’t find the perfect-sized rug, I would highly recommend that you have a carpet cut and finished to fit your needs.

Not only did I need a rug for my bedroom, I also had to hunt for a few more to replace those that suffered from the flood.

Don’t you just love this antique style oushak rug I found?

My Long-Awaited Kitchen Update

We recently installed hardware in our kitchen and I am so in love! And the most important thing is that I know I will love it for years to come.

Now I’m on the hunt for a light fixture to reign over my island. Of course, I will stick to my signature design statement: a gorgeous chandelier.

Here’s my top choice:

Here’s a peak at some others I’ve used in the past:

My Next Steps…

Thanksgiving weekend on my calendar has been boldly marked to remind me of my deadline for home renovation completion. With the first school bell of the year just around the corner, I will be doubly focused on finishing some of the main areas.

Here’s what’s on my list for next month:

  • Add modern art for my dining room. I hope to get that piece commissioned by an artist from Village Antiques (she can do the same for you!
  • Get side tables for my living room
  • Light up my home with lamps in select areas
  • Create a focal wall with stunning antique art
  • Finally finish my library! I may need a designer pal to help me on this one 😉
  • Get a new fireplace surround.

As you can see, there’s still a lot to do. But when we stay on top of making weekly progress, we can accomplish more than we ever thought possible!

I hope you’ve enjoyed a peek into my home project. Now I want to know what YOU have been working on this summer. Let us know in the comments below!

P.S. We even made some progress on our art walls this summer. Everyone is all in when creating an art wall at my house!
